BLAST PROTOCOL FOR DENTAL IMPLANTS

Dental implants require the same care as your natural teeth. A common misconception is that because implants are not “real,” they don't need brushing or flossing. While dental implants themselves cannot become infected, bacteria can still accumulate around them, leading to potential complications.

If the gum tissue surrounding the implant becomes infected, the infection can gradually damage the bone that supports the implant. Without a healthy bone structure, the implant will need to be removed. The BLAST protocol is designed to maintain the health of your implants by keeping the gums and bone around them healthy.

The BLAST protocol consists of two phases:

  • BLAST Activation Phase: This phase involves activating the dental implant and cleaning the implant site to ensure the best environment for success.
  • BLAST Maintenance Phase: After the implant is placed, the maintenance phase continues with regular follow-up appointments to reduce harmful bacteria and prevent infections around the implant.

BENEFITS OF THE BLAST PROTOCOL

  • Reduces harmful bacteria in the mouth
  • Enhances the implant’s ability to integrate with the bone
  • Reduces gum inflammation around the implant
  • Stimulates collagen formation (fibrosis)
  • Activates natural growth factors for healing

OPTIMIZE IMPLANT SUCCESS FROM THE Start

Millions of dental implants have been placed worldwide over the last two decades, and the dental field continues to improve implant placement techniques. At CEPI, we use advanced technology, like the PerioLase MVP-7, to help ensure better outcomes for your implants.

It’s a little-known fact that dental implants “age” before they are placed, losing some of their ability to integrate with the bone. As part of the BLAST protocol, we use the PerioLase to reactivate the titanium before implantation. This process, known as photofunctionalization, helps materials adhere to the titanium, allowing the bone to bond more closely to the implant in a process called osseointegration.

The second phase of the BLAST protocol uses a laser to decontaminate the bone and gums before placing the implant. This ensures a cleaner healing environment by eliminating harmful bacteria. The laser is proven to destroy harmful bacteria while preserving beneficial bacteria that are essential for oral health.

  • This process is used for both individual implants and full-arch implant placements.
  • By reactivating the titanium and ensuring a clean implant site, we maximize the implant’s chances for long-term success.

At CEPI, we incorporate cutting-edge technology, including the BLAST protocol with the PerioLase MVP-7 dental laser, to provide advanced care for your implants.

The PerioLase has been shown to eliminate bacteria that cause periodontal disease, and studies have demonstrated that it can kill 100% of bacteria on titanium implants consistently.

As part of routine follow-up visits, we use the BLAST protocol to clean and disinfect the tissue and bone around the implant at regular intervals. This proactive approach helps control harmful bacteria in your mouth, preventing it from infecting the implant site. By maintaining healthy gums, we protect your investment in the implant.

Advantages of the BLAST Protocol:

  • Kills harmful bacteria: Microflora in the mouth can influence bacteria growth on and around implants. By reducing harmful bacteria before placement, we can prevent immediate infections.
  • Comfortable patient experience: The low laser energy is soothing and relaxing for patients.
  • Optimized healing: Minimizes the need for antibacterial rinses that could interfere with the healing process.
  • Enhanced healing: Nd:YAG laser energy promotes the production of growth factors that assist in healing.
  • Proven effectiveness: Laser therapy has been shown to be more effective at reducing harmful bacteria compared to traditional treatments.
